This closed-loop solar water heating system is designed to maximize solar heating savings for a home occupied by 1 or 2 adults. This system converts any water heater into a solar powered water heater.
The external heat-exchanger design makes this a popular solution for revitalizing older systems and upgrading draindown and other closed-loop systems that have expensive replacement parts or parts that are no longer available.
This system:
- is designed using common solar water heating parts
- can connect to an existing water storage tank or work as a stand-alone unit
- provides automatic freeze protection
- works well in most climates, especially where freezing happens at least once a year or when freezing conditions can approach within minutes of collecting heat (such as rapid changing mountainous climates)
- uses a non-toxic propylene-glycol to protect from freezing temperatures
- requires fluid change-out about once every 3 to 5 years
- performs as well as SRCC OG-300 rated systems*
- does NOT qualify for incentives that require OG-300 certification*
- is one of the least expensive, freeze-protected active-systems available
- Closed-loop systems tend to have the lowest overall costs --other than passive systems
- can salvage an existing, broken system --just buy the parts you need
- may be able to use an existing domestic water heater for solar storage with some customization**

* This system is NOT OG-300 SRCC certified. It is a working example design, where components may be swapped for parts salvaged from an existing system to create a new one. This system uses common solar heating system components such as those found in OG-300 systems. Each OG-300 system specifies a particular configuration of parts; Each combination requires a separate OG-300 certification process. Too many working combinations exist to certify this type of system in a practical way while keeping prices low.
